Arguments...

It all started with suggestion on books... and we ended up debating on living and enjoying it!!

Alchemist suggests something about the way u enjoy life...ayn rand says about living.
u need to live to enjoy living...right?

ya... but all do live, dont we?

Live...we do...but as what??..as an object that breathes, eats, copulates, dies...decays??...what are our values by which we define that we live...how do u know that u live??...coz u feel u r body warm, coz u see the blood when cut, coz of any other reasons that are to do with physical stuff, rather than the mental.."thinking" i mean..

Values... are to be set. But that doesnot mean we donot live. Our life is defined by time. The fulfilment in living is defined by us - our goals, our values, our achievements and breath taking moments! And all do live, but many donot feel that they have lived cos they donot have the fulfilment... To get tat fulfilment, we need to enjoy every single moment of life...
I somehow feel "living" implicitly refers to "enjoying life"

Let's see how it goes further...

Living is an involuntary act...it is not out of your volition that you breathe and it is not out of your choice that you stop breathing(I literally mean the act)..I mean you dont consciously make a decision to breathe everytime you breathe..this makes you a living being. But if you want to Live in the literal sense, then you need some volition...what gives you the choice to decide how you live...the values that we speak about are(as you told) set...but arent they set after innumerable trial n errors...Values that a man adopts his defines his Life..if your value is non voilence...then may be you might turn into a Mahatma...agreed values are not created by the Individual alone...there are a set of values created by the scoiety..but the individual is completely free in his right mind to choose the values that he wishes...
Coming to goals and achievements...your goals, and the sense of achievement that comes along is also defined by the values that you choose...for example...getting a first rank is your goal...you can reach that goal by any means...the means that you would use to achieve what you want are presupposed by the values that you adopt. The ends can never justify the means...whatever ends you wish to achieve, if that is achieved without the consent or in difference from your values, it wudnt give you the sense of achievement.
And mere living is not enjoying...if that is the case, then there is no need for any scriptures..n there wouldnt be any problem in the world...there are always avenues for men to feel that he doesnt enjoy life..for a man without food, the man having a single meal a day seems to enjoy his life...for a man eating in his house, the man eating in Taj coramandel seems to enjoy his life...for a man eating in Taj, the man sleeping in the pavement might seem to enjoy his life...but all these people "live"....but they dont enjoy living...but I think that is the crux of all development..if man had to be happy at his current state, there would be no development...Unhappiness is the single essential virtue for development...If I am happy with what I have today, then Tomorrow will never be different from Today.

Hey Krish... I guess we are trying to get to the same point! As you say, mere living is not enjoying. And living is an implicit act. My point here is once 'living' is as such stated explicitly, it starts implicitly referring to 'enjoying life'!!

"Unhappiness is single essential virtue for development"... Well, I'm not able to agree on it! I guess it could be reworded as "Necessity is single essential virtue for development." The older you grow, the more responsible you become. The more your responsibilities, the more are you needs. All that a child needs is food and sleep. But a man leading a family needs to take care of every member of his family. He stretches himself to fulfill all those needs! Thus happens the development/ growth.

"If I'm happy with what I have today, then tomorrow will never be different from today" Okie... this looks pretty good at the outset. Lets take it at a little more depth. I guess you are tying happiness and satisfaction together. Happiness lies in today, in now. Lets say on an early morning you are walking in a garden full of flowers. A cool fragrant breeze blows on your face. You close your eyes, smile within and enjoy it. That moment the breeze was there. You enjoyed it. You felt the happiness inside.

If you combine happiness and your satisfaction, you will never be happy. Because, you will never be satisfied to the saturation (completion) during your life! Lets go by this example. If you say "I'll be happy when I will own a Scorpio." Ofcourse you would have a scorpio in some months or even years, but then will you be satisfied with just that? You may need something more everytime and automatically your happiness will keep shifting. This keeps happening all your life!

Happiness is all about looking at the small blessing that you are granted every moment -amidst all the big responsibilities on you!
