A daring remark & sad end

"Actresses acting only for money are equivalent to prostitutes"
A comment that made quite a sensation for a few days in Tamil industry.

How many movies are character based? How many actresses are given character roles? How many actresses see cinema as a career in art and acting? An actress doing a role of a prostitute in any movie still commands the dignity for her performance when compared to an actress appearing in vulgar (to be read as glamorous) outfits carefully coupled with feelingless expressions and movements that are supposed to ignite passion in a mad crowd of blind audience. How can anyone dare to call the later as an art- a career?

A story revolving around a simple village girl still needs that actress to be in shorts or swimsuit or at the least get drenched- dance in the rain, for a song so remotely related to the storyline! And the lyrics of songs these days can be a topic by itself! All such are beautifully termed as commercial or masala items and are unanimously accepted as a vital part of a hit movie. How many actresses take up these commercial items just for the sake of money? And what difference would they explain, even to themselves, for such a pricetagging of their self esteem along with their bodies from that of a prostitute? How many dared to say 'no' for such an exposure? And why does it prick when it is commented in black and white?

A daring remark that hit such idiotic commercialisation has for sure hit the entire industry, pricking the conscience of every single person in it. But the person who took the ownership of that comment should have stood by his words instead of succumbing to the huge protest. A very sad ending indeed.

Btw, can someone tell me the gender opposite for prostitutes? Just felt that the comment is incomplete!

Even before I cud comment, there are hoards of people, that yearn for your posts I guess....Good =))

BTW, coming to the post itself,I dont know (rather not yet heard...) who and what made him/her make that comment!...so no comments..
But I liked these words- "Feelingless expressions" & "mad crowd of blind audience"...though, the second concoction of words sounds, a code of fury than expression!!

If the actresses dont take to these scenes for money, can the honourable soul, explain....atleast give me one other reason for such scenes!!..U cant!..I dont think anyone acts for anything other than money...may be after getting money, to maintain that lifestyle, they act so..but the baseline is that, they are for money and nothing else!

"hoards of people"... sounds really nice :)
"I dont think anyone acts for anything other than money"... not sure what you are referring to. I feel there is definitely career and dignity in this industry. But the moment ethics and esteem are surrendered, it is no less than prostitution.
I just donot understand one thing... why are men never blamed for such?

The word prostiture is gender indiscriminate. Althought the word gigolo is often used for the male equivalent.

dd, acting is not an art, its a profession. You are there to make money.I make money by writing code. Actresses make money by dancing in the rain. Its a means to an end. It doesn't make them morally inferior to me or anyone else for that matter. I don't think the comment was right and I am glad he apologized

True CK, you and I work to make money. But can I call anything that is done for money as profession? Does that include prostitution too? Why then is prostitution "profession" considered immoral and inferior to that of a software engineer? If it is not inferior, why should the person be forced to apologize in public for his words?

The way I comprehend the phrase "work only for money" is to sell your "self" (your values, your respect) in exchange for fresh currency notes. That for me is definitely equivalent to prostitution.

Prostitution is no a profession!!! Profession is something you choose. Prostitution is a nightmare women are forced into.

It not immoral being a prostitute, It immoral to seek a prostitute. But the society conveniently shifted the blame on the prosititute.

In this convoluted context, comparison to a prostitute is translated into comparison to an immoral person. I don't believe actresses are immoral just because they act only for money.

Hence you can't compare them to prostitutes.

I find this statement hinting at immorality of those who are producing such thirdclass stuff, those who are acting it and those who are watching it too.
As you said, our society shifting the blame on women alone for ethical issues is sad.
Nice thoughtline CK, but I still have my own differences of opinion!

btw, one news, I actually found lateron that the comment was in an entirely different context -targetting a specific actress for not finishing the director's movie for want of her payment! What should I say now? :-)
